Dedicated to the development of diverse artistic expressions, Wing Yip Chan has demonstrated his commitment to innovation by combining percussion with modern technologies such as virtual reality and traditional intangible cultural heritage. His leadership in organising ground-breaking musical events, including major performances and cultural exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrates his vision of blending tradition with cutting-edge technology.
Recognised for his leadership and cultural impact, Wing Yip Chan has received a number of accolades, including the ‘Young Cultural Leader’ award in 2022, the ‘Ten Outstanding Hong Kong Students’ title in 2023, and most recently, the ‘Young Leader of 大灣區’ title in 2024. These honours reflect his continued influence in shaping the future of arts and culture in the Greater Bay Area and the wider region.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Chen's influence extends to youth leadership. He is a standing committee member of the Qingyuan Youth Federation and has led a number of Hong Kong-Guangdong cultural exchange programmes. As an arts development and music communication consultant, he plays an active role in shaping the future of the creative industries in Hong Kong and beyond.
Biography
Awarded the First Prize in the Italy Percussion Competition from Italy Percussive Art Society (IPAS). As seen on Rhythm Scene(USA), DrumSet MAG(Italy), Drum Club(Italy), Percussion Creativ, off-beat Magszine(German) and has published on the cover page in both SCMP - Young Post and the Knowledge magazine.
Gip Chan, born in Hong Kong, Chan is a keen and enthusiastic player in various ensembles and orchestras, performed throughout Europe and Asia. He has performed with renowned conductors such as Roger Bobo, Robert Ambrose, Nigel Clarke, Perry So, Mak Ka Lok, and appeared with Hong Kong Philharmonic, Macao Orchestra, Global Symphony Orchestra, SAR Philharmonic, The Learners Orchestra, Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong. He is currently principle timpanist of the HKBU Symphony Orchestra, percussionist of HKBU Wind Symphony, HKBU Percussion Ensemble and Hong Kong Young Musicians' Wind Orchestra (HKYMWO).
In 2015, Chan was invited to be one of the coaches, given lessons and organized concert - "Dear Dream" in Korea, Cheongsong Cultural Centre. Acclaim from Cheongsong county mayor. In November, he was invited again to Korea, performed in Cheongsong Apple Festival.
New trends
In August 2017, the Gip Percussion Ensemble, under which Ms. Chan is the founder and director, was established as a non-profit organization. Under the leadership of Honorary Artistic Advisors Mr. Choi Lide and Mr. Hu Shuhui, the Gip Percussion Ensemble recruits young percussionists to promote Hong Kong and percussion culture. .
Early activities
Apart from studying and performing, Chan joined voluntary work actively.
In 2013, Chan led the volunteers of the Hang Lung Group to promote the art event "Intelligence Infinity: Inspiration through Art" held by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Cultural Service Department.
Chan, being a tutor, shared his music knowledge and experience to the young children. By using different recycled materials, they had a chance to create their own instruments and had a taste of art and music. At last, both performed African drums with great success.
“Not only did the children feel the sense of success, but also understand the benefits of waste recycling. With little creativity and effort, they easily turned the plastic bottles into instruments which produced tuneful melodies.” (Ming Pao, 2013).
Besides, Chan also devoted himself to marching band music. He has been awarded with the level 6 achievement from DCI (Taiwan) Marching Academy. For rudimental drumming and marching band music, he had token lesson with Mr. Naoki Ishikawa, a renowned rudiment snare drum soloist. He is currently studying marching percussion with Mr. Steve Ulicny, a judge from the Drum Corps International (DCI). In 2011-2013, Chan was the center snare drummer of The Pegasus Vanguard.
Chan received the Talent Development Scholarship awarded by the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme in both 2014 and 2015, he had also received the Modern Academy 2015 Scholarship awarded by Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. At HKBU he has been studying percussion with Ms. Sophia Woo and timpani with Mr. Lap-Tak Choy. Chan had also token lesson from David Herbert, Thomas Burritt, Ted Atkatz, Casey Cangelosi, Aiyun Huang, Joe Porter, Aziz D. Barnard Luce, Rieko Koyama.
